No.

Get away.

Leave me alone…

"…PLEASE! Please just leave him alone! I'm begging you!"

"Sebastian, save me!"

"Shut UP you selfish brat he's in trouble!"

I sat up abruptly, eyes flashing open and heart racing. I wiped my sweating brow, breathing heavily. I closed my eyes, trying to revive the fractured memory of the dream that had awakened me so suddenly.

I rubbed my temples with a sigh. It was no use, the dream was gone.

There was a soft knock at the door.

"Miss Sutcliff? Are you awake?" A small voice whispered from outside the door. I reached across the bed and knocked on the wall twice. The door knob turned and a servant came in.

Her name was Evangeline. She was a sweet girl. Although slightly on the short, curvy side, Evangeline had a very large heart and a sweet smile. Of all the servants, Evangeline was my favorite to sketch. She was the only one who could still make me smile, with a never ending stream of untapped thoughts no one but me had the time to listen to. But I could listen to Evangeline all day. She told me about everything that happened in the outside world and inside the mansion, painting beautiful pictures with words and expressions, something I never had a real gift for. I could draw, and while I was drawing Evangeline could tell me stories. "You're a very good listener," she would often say to me. "Not many people care to listen to me like you do."

"Good evening, Miss Sutcliff," Evangeline said to me when she came in, a drawing pad and pencil in hand. I nodded silently, standing up and following the girl to the windowsill. She plopped down, setting down the drawing implements and proceeding to rearrange her curly brown hair into a more shapely form, all the while chatting about the newest member of the service staff.

"A small one he is, with hair even curlier than mine, that boy!" Evangeline said.  "His face is a mess of freckles, like the Lord spilled a whole jar of them on his face alone! I know you're an atheist, Miss Sutcliff, but I can't hardly think of another way to explain it!" I nodded quietly. Taking the pencil in my hand, I sketched Evangeline's shape and the window where she sat, taking each and every word she spoke as if my very life depended on it.

"You know how I was telling you of that poem I was writing, Miss Sutcliff? Well, I was going well into it but I couldn't hardly figure out why it sounded… not quite right. So I scratched a few words onto the page and realized: my inspiration had changed! You'll never guess what it is now, Miss Sutcliff, you most surely won't!" I continued to draw, noticed Evangeline's pause, and looked up at her, into her dark, lively eyes. She looked ready to burst with excitement.

"It's you, Miss Sutcliff! It most surely is! I never in my life expected you to be my inspiration, but the stories you tell with you pictures… of your handsome, beautiful man and how you lost him so suddenly… oh, the romance of it! So I stopped writing the poem and I wrote a song! Yes, one that fits you ever so well, I believe. A little solomn, sadly, but a beautiful thing despite! Would you…" Then Evangeline paused, unsure of how to go on. "Would you… like to hear it?" I looked up, and our eyes met for a long moment. I nodded. Evangeline beamed, her joy causing me to smile. So we sat, and I sketched Evangeline sitting upon the sill, and she sang to me the most beautiful, sorrowful, wonderful song I had ever heard.
